Unless you hang out with egomaniacs, you would probably never hear anyone say out loud, “stupid people make mistakes”. But if we are honest, all of us have at one time or another attributed a mistake to a mental deficit, carelessness, or less than adequate execution skills.

We have even smacked our own selves on the head saying “dumb, dumb, dumb” following a mistake. Our inner dialogue insists that “thinking people don’t make mistakes”.

One of the most difficult facts for me to wrap my head around when introduced to the discipline of Human Performance Improvement (HPI) was the fact studies have shown that humans make between 5-7 mistakes per hour when not under stressful conditions.

I found it difficult to believe that I made that many mistakes. Upon further study I came to realize that I might actually be “above average” in the number of mistakes I make.

Everyone makes mistakes!

This does not make you stupid, or careless it makes you HUMAN! Adopting a “mistakes are learning opportunities” mindset takes time and diligent effort, but the results are worth the growing pains, and the new mindset can vastly improve your outcomes and reduce your risks.
